Last of the blonde bombshells
With word this week in the press of an island resort in the Maldives set to be staffed exclusively by blondes about to open it doors in the next few years, it got me thinking about exactly what people want when they go on a luxury holiday.
Is having your room cleaned, spa treatments carried out, food cooked and drinks served by a blonde lady (or gent) the best way to go in attracting holidaymakers to its Indian Ocean shores?
Equally, a blonde-staffed ‘education centre' focusing on showing guests how to ‘always be perfect and look great' is perhaps not doing much to dispel those age-old myths about the more flaxen haired of ladies.
For me, the appeal of a far flung paradise isle is not just the scenery you get, the view and the lazing on the shore or around the pool, but the diversity of the locals, staff and visitors to your destination.
For example, a trip to Thailand wouldn't be nearly the same without the warmth and hospitality of its local people.
Not that an island full of blonde beauties wouldn't appeal to many people (as a man myself a bunch of blonde haired maidens serving isn't the biggest turn off in the world!), but it just seems to me that limiting your staff intake might just be a little bit off-putting to some of your potential guests.
There are specialist resorts out there of course that cater for the, shall we say, more open minded and expressive traveller, but I won't focus too much on that here. It's possibly best to simply say 'each to their own' - and we shall see how the resort fairs once it opens it doors in 2015. That is, if it can wriggle through any legal red tape preventing such an opening.
I tend to prefer the Maldives luxury hotels that are just that little bit more relaxed in every way, focusing less on the colour of your hair and more on the resort experience, ambience and atmosphere you are likely to find.
One of my favourites is Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa, which provides a luxurious escape in a truly idyllic island setting. Or, an environment focusing on nature and breathtaking scenery - somewhere like Huvafen Fushi.
