Pit Bulls: Who is the real bully? The breed or the owners
In the 80's there was public outcry against all German Shepherd owners for having a genetically violent dog. Then in the 90's it was Rottweilers. By the new millennium, the bully breeds were the focal point of all anti-dog minded folks. In this year, 2011 everybody and their mother knows how dangerous the pit bull breed can be. But, up until this point in American history this exact same breed of dog have been adorned and looked upon as the majestic and powerful yet, the peaceful family pet. There isn't much room for arguing statistics, these animals have done damage to families and other pets. I won't ignore the fact that this breed of dog is stronger than most and has a reputation of not letting go once it has landed a bite. However, is there anyone stopping to ask why? How can the breed, once idolized as being the most decorated war dog in history be currently viewed as an animal that should be banned? What would the family of the young blind and deaf Hellen Keller have to say about this? Their number one draft pick for the family pet was an American Pit Bull Terrier. The dog featured in the original Little Rascals was also an American Pit Bull Terrier. During World War 1, the American Pit Bull Terrier was used to represent the American military. This is the same breed of dog that to this day remains the most highly decorated military animal in history. "General Stubby" knew the call of the morning bugle, he knew marching routines, and even learned to salute! This American Pit Bull Terrier was known for locating wounded men and barking until medics arrived in the trenches. He could also infinitely distinguish the difference between enemy and fellow soldier, even acknowledging German language from English! Now, due to modern warfare tactics I'm sure there isn't much use for a war dog. However, there are dogs in federal and local police use, and although the most common breeds used are German Shepherd or Labrador the exceptional pit bull is found not only in use, but in high recommendation. The infamous General George Patton owned a pit bull. Even Presidents of our own country such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were proud owners of American Pit Bull Terriers!
So...The question remains lingering in your mind.. What has caused the media frenzy, and the on-going campaign against this breed of dogs? Why are the statistics so alarming? How can a breed go from American icon to feared beast? All of these can be answered in one simple word A word, which can make perfect sense to some of you, and leave doubt and question in others. The answer to these questions: PEOPLE. Yes, human beings are a crucial part of the problem. The news anchors who lack even the most basic knowledge of the subjects they report on, are often are caught red handed misinforming people on various occasions and topics. The statistics that lay at face value, leaving out key factors and variables that are without question playing the ideal roles in creating the destructive behavior of animals. The obvious truth, is that due to breeding for the purpose of producing the strongest possible animal, the American Pit Bull Terrier is targeted by dog fighting groups. These people choose a breed of dog they believe will kill for them, and quickly. These are people who earn a living from competitively breeding and raising canines that will kill on sight to make their master proud. The dogs are often chained up, left alone all day, and unless they are prized dogs, they usually die of disease or starvation. With all this in mind, would you expect a PERSON of this violent nature to teach their animals love? Can you expect these people to admire the dog as one of the family, or a teammate for victory and profit? Placing yourself into the shoes of a human using a canine to fight other canines for the mere entertainment and profit, would you teach the dogs to sit, shake hands, or any other tricks? Now with a basic mindset of a generalized dog fighter, think about that dog. Would you believe this dog is inclined to be friendly and respectful? Did these dogs even have a chance to be a "good boy"? The answer is no. Dogs do not have reason like a human, they know what they are taught to be and aim to please the one who taught them.
Finally, I come to the conclusion of my article. Who is the REAL BULLY? The dog, or the owner? Who chose a violent lifestyle, the Breed or the Owner? Many people would say the breed. In fact, there have been so many attempts at placing laws and restrictions on this particular breed of dog, that extensive research has been processed and the truth is revealing! The evidence provided by genuine canine experts, concludes that No One Breed of dog is anymore dangerous than another breed due to default genetics. This conclusion was reached in in August, 2002 by the American Temperament Testing Society, presented to the Alabama Supreme Court and this evidence was favored by the judge as well as a 7-2 vote by the jury. The Bully Breeds were in comparison with 185 other breeds of canine, so the testing was extensive. The American Temperament Testing Society shows a pass percentage of 86% for American Pit Bull Terriers as opposed to the Golden Retriever with a temperament of 84.9%. The love for all canines stems from deep within an instinct of my mind. Wolves were domesticated an estimated 15,000 years ago by some very brave people. Dogs have since become family, they are accustomed to us and vice versa. The proof is in the pudding: To believe that one particular breed sporadically transformed themselves into killing machines, and lack the ability to control themselves because they are genetically prone to turn on their masters, would be to say that all canines have this same rooted mentality. I hope with all sincerity that at least one person was even slightly influenced into the positive thinking and feeling about our own American Pit Bull Terriers. They deserve respect, love, and acknowledgment for giving so many individuals and families exactly that. Thanks for reading.
